2010 EANS Young Neurosurgeons Course and Meeting

Congress Innsbruck

Congress Innsbruck

February 20-24, 2010

Introduction

The EANS Young Neurosurgeons and Post Graduate Education Committees,

with support from EANS Administrative and Executive Councils, are organizing a

new Course and Meeting, to take place yearly, starting 2010.

Here we present an overview and outline of the Meeting details.

Concept and scope of the Meeting

The concept of this conference, its structure and organization, is a bit different

from other existing congresses. It is mainly addressed to Young Neurosurgeons,

bridging the gap that exists between the EANS Training Courses and other

formal Congresses. It is based upon two main columns: updating and

expanding knowledge, and sharing young neurosurgeons’ work, facilitating

interaction and networking.

Dates and Venue

February 20-24th (arrival Saturday, departure Wednesday), 2010. Innsbruck

(Austria)

Conference Center: Congress Innsbruck

Local PCO: PCO-Tyrol + med.ex (medical exhibition company)

Placed at the heart of the Alps, capital of the Tyrol, and geographically centered

in Europe, this cultural and university city offers the perfect venue for our

meeting.

It is very accesible and well connected both by train or plane, at low cost.

It is also planned that Innsbruck will be the permanent venue for the future

editions of the EANS Young Neurosurgeons Course and Meeting.

Meeting Schedule:

Saturday: arrival, registration, and evening welcome reception

Sunday-Tuesday: morning session- free time- afternoon session

Wednesday: morning session

Scientific Program

The program is divided in two main blocks: morning update lectures by leading

surgeons, and afternoon lectures by young neurosurgeons.

Each day is assigned to a main area in neurosurgery:

Monday- Vascular

Tuesday- Oncology and Pediatrics

Wednesday- Spine and Peripheral Nerve

Thursday- Trauma and Functional

Lectures are grouped as follows:

A- MORNING SESSION: (Plenary)

1- History Cycle: each day (Sunday-Tuesday), a lecture will be

presented related to the History of Neurosurgery. This will be a

cycle of three lectures: one on international neurosurgery, a

second one on european neurosurgery and a third one on the

history of an european national society. With ongoing courses, we

want to build a body of knowledge on the history of neurosurgery.

2- “Challenging topics”: We group parallel lectures on a topic that is

either new, specially interesting, or that relates to an area in

which other specialties are taking the lead. We keep an open

mind regarding industry and companies, and this is an appropiate

forum to present some of the newest or most challenging

technologies. “Challenging topics” is also a forum for discussion,

for instance, of two different solutions to the same technical

advance. For 2010 our “challenging topics” will be:

i. Vascular: “Intracranial stenting”

ii. Oncology: “Maximizing tumor resection”

iii. Spine: “Endoscopic spinal surgery”

3- Update lectures: Different “hot topics” by leading neurosurgeons

B- AFTERNOON SESSION(lectures by young neurosurgeons-smaller groups)

1. Video and image: young neurosurgeons performing techniques

or operations, for discussion and feedback

2. Clinical case presentation: with interactive electronic voting

system

3. Clinical and research presentations. A great opportunity to get

in touch with people in other parts of Europe interested in the

same research topic or undertaking similar projects.

There will be also a poster display area.

Social Program

a. Dinner: all participants have dinner together every day of the

conference.

b. Ski package: in the middle of the day, we will offer the possibility to ski,

using a ski-lesson format in groups. This is meant as a very effective

socializing tool, attractive both to skiers and non-skiers. We offer a

limited time for this, as we do not think of this meeting as a “skimeeting”

(Innsbruck itself is not a ski-resort)

Registration Fee

It has not already been established, but will be in the range of prices for EANS

Training Courses.

The fee will include accomodation, course & meeting, all breakfast + dinners,

and social activity (ski package: rental + ski + lessons)

CME

There will be strict control of attendance, as well as a voluntary examination

after the course. Attendance + examination= CME accreditation and certificate

of the Course.

Please note: this is an outline of the course structure and organization. We

plan to announce it and open registration next June, 2009.
